What is Wisdom?

Noun

  • The quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgment, the quality of being wise
  • The soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge and good judgment

Have we finally reached the stage of human evolution where we can rise beyond animalistic tendencies of kill or be killed?   By looking around the world today, many would quickly conclude the answer is no.  I know different.

There are many, many incredibly gifted and passionate people “waking up” to ...

Enough!?

Why are you doing what you do? What is your true professional passion?

An unknown author wrote the following story. It’s a great one. Incorporate the ideas provided below the story and watch your business strategy thrive.

An American Investment Banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several small fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of ...

To Die For

What concept or idea would you literally die for? For most, death is feared. The thought of one’s final breath is denied, ignored and often avoided at all costs.

Last week I had a profound experience. While visiting the ancient city of Agora, located in Athens Greece, I stood next to the pedestal ruins where thousands of years ago the great philosophers, academics and cultural leaders stood before their fellow citizens sharing information, wisdom and insight.

It was humbling to realize that ...

The Magnificent Money Machine

The last 60 days have been amazing. In this short span of time, I have shared personal discussions with over 60 CEOs and business owners not to mention the many folks that make up their executive teams. From small enterprises to those doing tens of millions of dollars annually. Their insights, ideas and frankly indecision are most telling about our current economic environment.

Fundamentally, all are thinking deeply about how to best build their businesses over the near and longer-term. For ...

Katrina is Coming

Be prepared. Be very, very prepared.

Andy Grove, the founder and past CEO of Intel passed away on March 21. Grove was arguably one of the brightest; most forward thinking executives of our time. A classic quote from his well-read book Only the Paranoid Survive states “success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive.”

Interestingly, Intel, one of the tech icons has steamily lost its way. The company has begun the process to layoff 12,000 employees over the next year. ...

Master Meltdown

Even those at the top of their game have moments of doubt, disappointment and even total disintegration.  What truly defines a Master is how they rebound from life’s challenges.

The first major professional golf tournament every year is the Masters. It is fitting that the 12th hole, aptly named Amen Corner, dismantled the reigning champion, Jordan Speith.  Stay with me, this has direct applicability to becoming an exceptional leader in business and in life.

Speith is a 22 year-old golf prodigy.  He ...

Welcome to the Jungle

In the last refrain of the infamous Guns & Roses hit song Welcome to the Jungle, it reads:

“In the jungle welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your knees, knees
In the jungle welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to you
Its gonna bring you down, ha!”

The essence of this song speaks to a less desirable side of human nature, arrogance and greed.

Hundreds if not thousands of companies have failed over the last number of ...

The Secret Sauce

Business leaders are pressured from all angles. How can C-Suite executives successfully toggle between the busyness of day-to-day demands and the balance so many yearn for? The answer is to find “flow” or “the zone” as some refer to it.

Mihaly Csikszentimihalyi, the best selling author of Flow, The Psychology of Optimal Experience is often attributed to popularizing the concept. Simply put, “flow is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a ...

Playing Catch – The Revenue Driver

One powerful skill that exceptional business leaders and top revenue producers continue to hone is the ability to play catch.

Harken back to the classic movie Bull Durham. You may remember the rocket-armed pitcher “Nuke” LaLoosh, played by Tim Robbins. He consistently threw screaming fastballs in an attempt to strike out hitters. His stubborn approach prevented him from considering new options or strategically thinking about how to manage each batter he faced. He remained stuck in the minor leagues ...

Thoughts are Things

As the year comes to a close, it is a great time for leaders to review progress made and opportunities missed.

Executing a company strategy is one of the most challenging responsibilities leaders face.   A major reason so many businesses struggle to consistently produce desired results is due to a lack of clarity and beliefs in company goals.

There is a big difference between intellectually understanding the company objectives and personally believing the stated goals.

It is important to remember, thoughts are things.  ...
